Creative Landscapes: exploring heritage accessibly

Creative Landscapes is an Accentuate project working with disabled people to find accessible and creative approaches to exploring and sharing our heritage.

Established by English Heritage, Creative Landscapes is now hosted by Screen South and works closely with the national Heritage Open Days programme. There are two main strands to the project:
• Developing accessible Heritage Open Days programmes.
• Working with disabled artists and arts organisations to find accessible and replicable approaches exploring heritage.
The project has established a new Heritage Open Days programme in Hastings & St Leonards,  and worked to support and revive the existing programme in Gosport. These programmes have worked with disabled people from the start, planning accessible events, producing resources and providing training to local groups.
Since 2009, the project has also commissioned disabled artists and arts organisations to undertake residencies that work with people to enable them to explore their heritage in a creative way. Project Art Works explored the textures and sounds of the 19th Century Fort Brockhurst in Gosport with a group of adults with neurological disabilities; Mandie Saw ran a series of workshops with the Gosport Discovery Centre, working with the local studies collection paint, photograph and create memory boards of the heritage that was significant to participants. In Hastings, Lynn Weddle worked young photographers from the Sussex Autism to photograph The Stade, producing a slide show with commentary; and in addition to creating her own work, artist Sally Booth ran workshops for children at Hastings Museum and Art Gallery and the very popular Drawing Tent as part of Heritage Open Days. In 2011, the project’s final creative commission will be Trail Blazing: developing accessible tours.
