The first of these events was very successful. Accentuate funding secured the Disabled British Open Golf Championship which took place in August 2009 at the Old Thorns Golf Club in Hampshire. This was the first truly pan-disability golf event in the UK. The Disabled British Open (DBO) hopes to further establish the South East as the foremost region in the UK promoting sporting excellence for disabled people.
The event aimed to attract competitors from the UK, Europe and beyond enabling them to showcase their talent, and the South East’s commitment to furthering disabled sports and leaving a lasting legacy within the region for future generations. It certainly achieved this aim with over 70 competitors taking part from all over Britain and many were international players.
The event was also broadcast on Sky Sports Xtra which offered a wonderful opportunity to promote the event as well as the talents of the disabled golfers.
The event has gone from strength to strength and we are looking forward to the third Disabled British Open on 20th and 21st August. Last year the it was held at the prestigious East Sussex National and we are delighted it is returning there. Accentuate is also extremely excited to support the inaugral Junior Disabled British Open which will run alongside the Disabled British Open this year.
