Accentuate

Major Events is the Accentuate project delivered by Tourism South East that seeks to bring world class sporting events to the South East.  A fantastic example of this is the now internationally renowned Disabled British Open which will return to East Sussex National Golf Resort & Spa on August 20th & 21st.  For the first time the event will take place at a weekend and we would like to welcome everyone to come along and watch the tournament. The Disabled British Open is free to spectators and offers a great day out.

The Disabled British Open is a pan-disability amateur golf tournament, offers golfers with a wide range of disabilities the opportunity to compete against each other according to their golf handicaps. The tournament also offers the more elite golfers the opportunity to compete in a "gross" strokeplay tournament to become the Disabled British Open Champion of the year.

For 2011 the tournament will also be joined by the inaugural Junior Disabled British Open, offering golfers between the ages of 12 & 18 the opportunity to compete against each other in tournament conditions.  The senior DBO is now full but we are still seeking junior golfers to take part in the event.  If you or anyone you know would like to take part in the first fully inclusive National disabled golfing tournament please visit http://www.disabledbritishopen.org/junior-dbo for more information.

The success of the Disabled British Open relies on the support of many volunteers managing a wide variety of roles - marshalling, scoring, ball-spotting, raking bunkers, administration and registration.

The volunteer recruitment programme has now commenced and we welcome your support for the event. Through the volunteering programme there is also the opportunity to gain a free NVQ qualification in crowd marshalling and stewarding.  To volunteer for the event, please visit the VOLUNTEER section of the website - www.disabledbritishopen.org. Destination Zones is a project delivered for Accentuate by Tourism South East.  This project aims to achieve the goal of making the South East the most accessible and welcoming region.
Thanks to Accentuate funding, Tourism South East are able to offer a significant discount on it's Welcome to Excellence 'Welcome All' training workshop which offers practical advice and guidance to assist hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism businesses in providing an enhanced service to customers with disabilities and specific needs.

The course covers key aspects of the Equality Act 2010 as well as practical advice and information on how to communicate effectively and improve accessibility.

Celebrate and Commission is led by Caterina Loriggio, Creative Programmer for London 2012, South East.  Through these project strands Accentuate supports Our Sporting Life.
Our Sporting Life is to take part in the River & Rowing Museum Pavilion at the World Rowing Junior Championships
The World Rowing Junior Championships will take place at the Olympic site at Eton Dorney from August 4th -7th 2011. The River & Rowing Museum will be there with its own pavilion to bring sporting heritage, including Our Sporting Life, to the latest generation of international rowers.
The exhibition will include six topics:
• River & Rowing Museum
• Rowing
• Canoeing
• Our Sporting Life
• Eton College/Dorney Lake Trust
• Plans for 2012

The display will include rowing boats and canoes hanging from the roof in a similar style to the Museum Rowing Gallery and there will be exhibition cases for iconic objects. Our Sporting Life will have postcards to record “what sport means to you” as well as exhibition panels and film.
The Museum is working closely with LOCOG and others to be able to do the same at this Olympic site in 2012. This will be a unique development and one that should encourage both further visits to and support for the River & Rowing Museum and further the Our Sporting Life campaign to record sporting memories and experiences that have inspired individuals and communities.
The River & Rowing Museum and Our Sporting Life have also been invited to exhibit at the London 2012 press centre and is discussing other ways of participating in the celebrations both at the main Olympic site and elsewhere in London in 2012.
