Young people at The halow project (a charity focused on working with young people with learning needs) are building a campaign based around their opinions and ideas.

They are making a campaign around the issues and questions related to finding meaningful paid work as someone with a learning disability or learning need and are working with animation artist, Craig Hills, to make a film to present to an audience in the Spring.

Project aims and achievements

Show or hide

  • We meet every Thursday morning with Craig to work on our animation film.
  • So far we have designed a storyboard and written a script for the film.
  • We are planning to tell the story of Anna trying to find a job and all the challenges she faces.
  • Then we want to show how those challenges could be overcome if she had the help and support she needed.
  • We are using model making and stop start animation to make our film and after Christmas we are going to start using a green screen so that the real Anna can be in the film with our models.

What we want to achieve

Show or hide

  • We want employers and business to think about how they could make their places of work more accessible for people with a learning disability.
  • We want people to realise how much young people with a learning disability have to add to the world of work.
  • We want more young people with learning disabilities to find meaningful jobs in the future.

The project has only just started. We want to collect as many stories as we can to make the campaign as strong as possible. To share a story about wanting, finding and keeping meaningful employment visit our blog http://campaignatthehalowproject.tumblr.com/

Personal experience

Show or hide

The young people who are taking part in this part of The Campaign! Project, are all from The halow project. Some of them attend the ‘Building Futures” Programme, run by The halow project and some are part of the youth committee that steer the work of the organisation. Most of the young people have some experience of work or looking for work. Some have found paid work and many do voluntary work, all of them are hoping to have paid jobs in the future. They are working in partnership with Employability to help make their campaign. Employability aim to support young people with learning disabilities, in finding work in the future.

Anna's Story

Show or hide

Anna has taken on the main part of the film. Anna’s dream job is to work in a café serving people food and drinks. She feels she could be really good at this job if she was given the opportunity to try and learn about the different skills that she would need. Everyone in the group had great ideas about their dream job but they decided that Anna’s story was a good story to focus on for the campaign.
